Techniek achter FDM 3D printen
Voor Fused Deposition Modeling wordt gebruik gemaakt van een gloeidraad van kunststof, welke via de spuitmond van de 3D printer op het basismateriaal wordt aangebracht. Er wordt, net als bij andere printtechnieken, laag voor laag gewerkt. Na het aanbrengen van de gloeidraad van kunststof heeft het materiaal de tijd om uit te harden. Vervolgens wordt op deze uitgeharde laag een nieuwe gloeidraad aangebracht, welke zich aan de vorige laag hecht. Op deze manier ontstaat een heel stevig product. Ten opzichte van andere technieken voor 3D printen biedt FDM het voordeel, dat het een relatief snelle productiemethode is. Daarbij is het een hele gebruiksvriendelijke manier van 3D printen. Nadeel is de minder goede nauwkeurigheid dan bij andere printtechnieken.
Toepassingen van Fused Deposition Modeling
Het aantal organisaties wat kiest voor 3D printen met bijvoorbeeld Fused Deposition Modeling groeit. Met name het laten printen van onderdelen voor het productieproces is populair. Door dit uit te besteden aan een partij als Edustry, hoeft men zelf niet in een dure printer te investeren. Ook voor complete prototypes van producten kan de FDM 3D printtechniek ingezet worden. Bij het gebruik van FDM kiest men vaak voor thermoplasten als ABS en PLA. Andere middelen die gebruikt worden zijn nylon, PETG, PEI, ASA en TPU.
